This trip started when i first contact Birdpacker about birdwatching in Tahura Raden Soerjo at Batu, East Java. Batu is a higher city than Malang. We can reach the city for about half an hour from Malang Station.
I ask Birdpacker about the possibility of do birding with toddler since my husband and i will travel with A, our son. He is 2 years and 10 months old. This is not his first time going outdoor since he always comes with us.
I heard about Tahura Raden Soerjo about some years ago and it’s one of a best spot to do birdwatching in Batu. And Birdpacker is a community of birdwatcher located also in Batu. They started the bird-guide community based on conservation about bird issue in Indonesia.
My family start the journey from Stasiun Pasar Senen, Jakarta, with Majapahit train on Thursday evening 6 PM and arrived in Malang Station on Friday around 10 AM.
On Saturday morning, we started our birding journey with Birdpacker. Totally there are 7 people plus 3 kids. Swiss and Ismi’s daughter, Lala and Sani, age 4 and 3 years old, also joined us.
The weather are sunny at that time. The view of Mount Arjuna’s peak is pretty clear.
We enter the Tahura gate and then walk around to start our birding near the small river stream. We don’t have to wait for a long time when the Javan Kingfisher appears and perch on a branch not far from us.
The Javan Kingfisher fly away but then fly back and get closer to us.
It was the first time for me to see Javan Kingfisher clearly and in a close distance.
We then walk again in a walking path and see Sooty-Headed Bulbul. I saw the one of them bring such an insect to a branch. Then i saw Black-winged Flycatchershrike and Ashy Drongo.
After that we walking in a jogging trekk. We do a little higher trekking till we see the cave. I still have to learn a lot since it’s still hard for me to see little bird flying fast in a tree. The Birdpacker team heard about Rusty-breasted Cuckoo singing and Oriental Cuckoo.
We rest for a while in a small stream. I still wish i could see kingfisher again but nothing come.
At 11.30 AM we move to Watu Ondo parking area and Indigo Flycacther welcoming us. Luckily, there’s also one Crested Honey Buzzard soaring above us. Not too long before it then disappeared.
Then we move again and saw Flame-fronted Barbet in a Ficus tree. It was eating the fruit.
And then in the same tree there’s the Pink-headed Fruit Dove. Firstly it was difficult for me to see. But the Pink-headed Fruit Dove move a little bit and enjoying his lunch in a tree so we can see clearly. My son also see the bird through the camera and we enjoyed it for long enough time.
We ended up the birdwatching trip, leave Tahura Raden Soerjo, and praying in mosque nearby. After that all of us eat bakso in a small canteen nearby.
I would like to say thank you so much to all Birdpacker team for the kindness during the trip. They are so humble and ready to guide my family and a very amateur birder like me. I hope this isn’t my last time come to Tahura Raden Soerjo.
